What is Freemasonry?

It’s perhaps the most misunderstood ‘secret society’ in the world…

And it is also one of the most visible. It is one of the world’s oldest and most popular fraternal organizations. Almost every country in the world has a Grand Lodge of Freemasons. Freemasons wear clothing and jewellery with the square and compass and yes they have bumper stickers! If  Freemasonry is a secret society…  they need a refresher on stealth.

There is no simple definition that can describe what Freemasonry is. Based on the medieval stonemason craft guilds, Freemasonry is a fraternity of men. Men bound together by their words of honour and obligations. Using the language, symbolism and tools of the medieval stonemasons guild, Freemasonry teaches lessons of social and moral virtues. Freemasonry uses the ‘building of a structure’ as a symbol for the ‘building of character’ in men.

The Four Values

There are four values that encapsulate the heart and soul of Freemasonry. These four values are Friendship, Integrity, Respect, and Charity. They are the guiding lights that inspire Masons to lead lives of purpose, character, and benevolence. In a world that often values material success, Freemasonry serves as a reminder that the most profound achievements are those that uphold these fundamental principles, enriching the lives of individuals and communities alike.

Friendship

The fraternity places importance on fostering strong, genuine, and enduring connections among its members. Freemasons understand that the foundation of any honorable society rests on the warmth and trust shared among its members. The friendships formed within Masonic lodges often extend beyond the walls, reflecting the commitment to mutual support and brotherhood.

Integrity

Freemasons are unwavering in their dedication to upholding the highest moral and ethical standards in all aspects of life. They believe in living their lives with honesty, fairness, and a commitment to truth. It is a dedication to integrity that sets Freemasons apart, as they strive to be pillars of honor in their communities and society at large.

Respect

Respect is a value deeply engrained in the fabric of Freemasonry. It goes beyond mere courtesy; it represents a profound acknowledgment of the worth and dignity of every individual. Freemasons are encouraged to respect each other’s beliefs, opinions, and backgrounds, fostering an environment where differences are celebrated rather than divisive. This spirit of respect extends to the broader community, demonstrating Freemasonry’s commitment to universal brotherhood.

Charity

Benevolence and charity are central to the ethos of Freemasonry. Masons actively seek ways to contribute to the well-being of their communities and society. Whether through acts of kindness, philanthropic endeavors, or support for charitable causes, Freemasons strive to make a positive impact. Charity is not just a principle; it’s a way of life, reflecting the fraternity’s dedication to leaving the world better than they found it.
