The Three Degrees
Freemasonry is organized into a structure of degrees, each of which imparts specific teachings, rituals, and symbols. The three primary degrees in Freemasonry are often referred to as the “Blue Lodge” degrees or “Craft Lodge” degrees. These degrees form the foundational structure of Freemasonry and are commonly found in lodges around the world. Here’s an overview of the three degrees:
Entered Apprentice Degree (1st Degree)
The Entered Apprentice Degree is the first step in a Mason’s journey. It symbolizes the beginning of a new Mason’s initiation into the Craft Lodge. During this degree, candidates undergo a ritual initiation ceremony that includes symbolic elements like being hoodwinked, wearing an apron, and receiving certain instructions. The candidate is introduced to basic Masonic symbols and concepts, such as the use of the square and compasses, the importance of moral integrity, and the concept of self-improvement.
Fellow Craft Degree (2nd Degree)
The Fellow Craft Degree follows the Entered Apprentice Degree and represents the second stage of a Mason’s progression. In this degree, the candidate continues to learn about Masonic symbolism and receives further teachings related to intellectual and moral development. The ritual includes elements such as the use of the plumb, level, and square, and the candidate gains a deeper understanding of the importance of education, skill development, and the pursuit of knowledge.
Master Mason Degree (3rd Degree)
The Master Mason Degree is the culmination of the initial three degrees and is often considered the heart of Masonic teachings. During this degree, candidates experience a symbolic death and rebirth, which represents a spiritual and moral transformation. The Master Mason Degree explores themes of mortality, the search for truth, and the value of virtue. Candidates are introduced to additional symbols, such as the “no less than five” points of fellowship and the “all-seeing eye.” Upon completing this degree, a Mason becomes a Master Mason and gains full membership rights within the lodge.
These three degrees are collectively known as the “Blue Lodge” degrees, and they form the foundation of Freemasonry. Beyond these degrees, there are additional degrees and orders within Freemasonry that members can choose to explore based on their interests and affiliations. Each degree builds upon the previous one, offering a progressive and allegorical journey of self-discovery, moral improvement, and spiritual growth. It’s important to note that the specific rituals, symbols, and teachings associated with these degrees may vary among different Masonic jurisdictions and lodges.
